  How can I become an exceptional leader?

My team work well and I trust them, but sometimes I feel like they are working against me not for me. They don’t understand the things that are important to me, they don’t seem to want to work hard and I feel that they don’t appreciate what it’s like to be the owner of a business. How can I get them to understand?

And why should they? Have you ever asked them what’s important to them? Do you let them contribute in a way that’s acceptable to them? Do they know what’s happening in the business, where you’re going and what’s important?

There are as many leadership styles as there are leaders; from Mahatma Ghandi to Richard Branson and whether you are managing a team, captaining a team or leading a major corporation, your leadership style is crucial to your success. You may have a natural bent for a particular style or you may use different styles to suit different situations, but understanding the styles and the impact they have is crucial to your success.

In addition to applying the right leadership style to a situation, be it autocratic, bureaucratic or charismatic, another important criteria for success is communication.

Through effective communication you can inspire, engage and motivate your team as well as ensure that the business operates the way you want it to operate.
