Diane Birch Business Coaching Solutions  My business is successful but I’m not happy and I’m having trouble sleeping, what’s wrong with me?

Q:
I have a successful double glazing company with 10 men working for me but I seem to have lost it. I have ‘duvet’ days and am miserable. My wife doesn’t understand why because we have a nice life with money coming in, 2 annual holidays and we want for nothing, but I just feel like all the passion has left me. What’s wrong with me?

A:
There are a number of things that could be going on here so it’s going to be a matter of elimination.

The first thing we did was a Values Elicitation exercise. Values, Beliefs and Relationships can power you towards the achievement of your goals, but if they are not in balance they can also act as a block between where you are now and where you want to be. After ranking your chosen values in order of importance you are asked the following questions:

Diane Birch Business Coaching Solutions  How do you live this value in daily life?

Diane Birch Business Coaching Solutions  How do you compromise this value? (What do you do that doesn’t support it)

Diane Birch Business Coaching Solutions  What more could you do to be true to this value?

This exercise helped us to understand the balance between John’s goals and his belief system and how this affected his relationships and professional success.

During the exercise we ascertained that John was passionate about glass, how it is made, its history, durability, beauty and usefulness. His current business however, seemed dry and dull to him, holding little interest or excitement. He was busy fitting windows and doors in new builds and conservatories, but what he would love to do is restore an old mansion house or church. I asked John about his marketing strategy and he came right back at me with ‘There’s nothing wrong with that we get loads of work, it’s very successful’. I asked him what kind of work it was bringing in and he had one of those light bulb moments we all love! ‘All those new builds and conservatories I loathe!’

We made some changes to John’s marketing strategy and he was soon restoring that 18th century mansion house, getting up early to travel and working really hard but loving it. We restructured the business to ensure that he continued his success with the double glazing and he went from strength to strength.
