Twelve Time Management Tips
Step One
Break the task down into manageable chunks
Step Two
Set aside time to plan - plan a week in advance and some time each day to review. Draw up a spreadsheet to help you, split it into: things you should be doing weekly and things you should be doing daily. Be realistic about what you are going to be able to achieve.
Step Three
Prioritise- according to the level of importance and urgency
Step Four
Delegate - which tasks can be shared or delegated to someone else. Could this task provide a development opportunity for one of your team?
Step Five
Review your working practices – spend time to clear your desk of unnecessary clutter
Step Six
Carry out the most important activities at the time of day you function best. Try to concentrate on one thing at a time
Step Seven
Arrange any training/ coaching which may improve your skills
Step Eight
If you find you keep putting something off, ask yourself why? Is it monotonous? Break it down. Is it too big and you don’t get time? Break it down. Is it something that is unfamiliar? Seek help.
Step Nine
Batch similar tasks together, why re-invent the wheel?
Step Ten
Either start with the most interesting part of the job to capture your attention, or get the most daunting part over with first, rewarding yourself with the good bit later.
Step Eleven
Think positively - there is a reason you are the best person to complete this task
Step Twelve
Go public - telling others will make it more difficult to wriggle out of!
